Context
Russia has tested the Tsirkon (Zircon) submarine from the Severvinsk nuclear submarine in the Barents Sea in the Arctic.
About 3M22 Zircon cruise missile:
- The missile reached its target set at a distance of 450 km in less than 4 and a half minutes.
- It hit targets successfully upto a range of 1,000 kms (620 miles).
- The Missile reached hypersonic speeds of more than Mach 8.
- Missile was launched from the white sea and hit the target at the Barents Sea.
- The 3M22 Zircon is a scramjet-propelled hypersonic cruise missile.
- The Zircon arrow is able to fly nine times faster than the speed of sound.
Barents Sea
- It is located in the northern parts of Norway and Russia.
- A shallow sea shelf with an average depth of 230 metres, it is bordered by the Norwegian coast to the west, the Kola Peninsula in the south.
- There are three major types of ocean water in the Barents Sea.
- Atlantic water comes from the North Atlantic drift
- the cold Arctic waters from the north
- coastal waters
