Context

An ultra-sensitive, easy-to-use sensor to detect arsenic contamination in water and food samples in 15 minutes has been developed. The sensor is developed under the INSPIRE Faculty fellowship of the Department of Science & Technology, GoI.

About the Arsenic Sensor

  • The developed sensor is highly sensitive and metal selective.
  • It involves a single step and is applicable for various water and food samples.
  • The developed sensor can be operated even by a common man by just correlating the color change (on sensor surface) with the standard labels.
  • Base material: It is developed on mixed metal (cobalt/molybdenum) based metal-organic frameworks.
  • Sensitive:The sensor can detect a wide range of arsenic- from 0.05 ppb to 1000 ppm.

Significance of the development

  • Detection of arsenic is imperative to protect from the possible health issues associated with arsenic.
  • Arsenic with other heavy metals is hazardous for health in the condition of high concentration consumption.

Arsenic

  • Arsenic is a naturally occurring heavy element that is widely distributed in the Earth’s crust.
  • It is found in water, air, food, and soil.
  • Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a widespread problem.

Other heavy metals and their impacts

  • Metals such as arsenic, lead, nickel, mercury, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, zinc, and selenium are highly toxic even in minor quantities.
  • Heavy metals become toxic if not metabolized by the body and accumulate in the soft tissues.
  • They may enter the human body with food, water, air, or absorption through the skin.
