Tele-Law program touches new milestone

Context

The Department of Justice commemorated the milestone of crossing nine lakh beneficiaries under its Tele-Law programme.

About the Tele-Law Program

  • Tele-Law means the use of communications and information technology for the delivery of legal information and advice.
  • Launched by: Ministry of Law and Justice in collaboration with Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
  • Year: 2017
  • Objective: To tackle cases at pre–litigation stage.
  • It connects Lawyers to Litigants through video conferencing facilities and telephone service to provide legal advice.
  • The concept of Tele-Law is to facilitate the delivery of legal advice through a panel of lawyers stationed at the State Legal Services Authorities (SALSA) and CSC.
  • The project initiates to connect citizens with lawyers through video conferencing facilities by the Para-Legal Volunteers stationed at identified 1800 Panchayat.

Reach of the Programme

  • Tele-Law programme is presently operational in 633 districts, including 115 Aspirational Districts across 34 States and Union Territories through a network of 50 thousand Common Service Centres.
  • Tele-Law saw a surge of 369 percent growth in number of beneficiaries seeking legal advice during last one year.

Other e-Courts initiatives

  • Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Court’s efficiency (SUPACE): It is an AI-driven tool designed to assist judges with processing information.
  • National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG): It will permit citizens to check the pendency of cases across the country.
  • E-SevaKendras: The eSeva Kendra are dedicated to and are supposed to serve the common litigant as a one-stop center for all his/her Court related needs.

  • Draft Vision Document of e-Courts Project Phase III: A sub-committee the E-Committee of the Supreme Court has released the Draft Vision Document of e-Courts Project Phase III. The objective it hopes to achieve is on finalization to provide a blueprint for the judiciary to adopt and implement digitization.
