Context
In a major milestone in providing all-weather connectivity to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh close to the border with China, the BRO recently carried out the breakthrough blast of the main tube of the Sela tunnel which marks the completion of the excavation process.
- The foundation stone for the Sela tunnel was laid by the Prime Minister in 2019.
About Sela Main Tunnel
- It will provide connectivity between Guwahati in Assam and Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh via the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang road.
- Developed by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) under Project Vartak.
- This tunnel, constructed using the latest New Austrian Tunneling Method, is much below the snow line allowing all-weather travel without the challenges of snow clearance.
- The tunnel will reduce the distance by 6 km and the hour travel time and ensure speeding through Sela Pass and ensure communication even in winter.
- It will strengthen national security and will work to strengthen the socio-economic condition of the citizens by bringing a big change in the transport facility of the local population.
Border Road Organization (BRO)
- The BRO was conceived and raised in 1960 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru by coordinating the rapid construction of a network of roads in the North and North-eastern border region of the country.
- It works under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence.
- It has diversified into a large spectrum of construction and development works comprising airfields, building projects, defence works and tunneling and has endeared itself to the people.
