New Medicine for Bovine Mastitis

Context

Recently, the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) has developed a poly-herbal medicine called Mastirak Gel to treat Mastitis in Dairy Cattle.

What is Mastitis?

• Mastitis, or inflammation of the breast, is the most common and expensive disease of dairy cows in the world.
• Cause: Although stress and physical damage may cause inflammation, infection with invading bacteria or other microorganisms (fungi, yeast and possibly bacteria) is a major cause of mastitis.
  • Several types of bacteria cause very different types of mastitis.
  • Infections begin when microorganisms penetrate the teat canal and multiply in the mammary gland.
  • Injecting antibiotics almost always cures clinical disease but may not eliminate bacterial infections.

How does it impact?

• It reduces milk production, increases production costs and makes milk less useful for the use and production of liquids.
• It can affect farm production due to low milk production, thus affecting income-generating activities.

Prevention

• New infections are prevented by focusing on management efforts to reduce the presence of pathogens at the end of the breast.
• One of the most important management practices to prevent the transmission of new infections is the use of an effective antibiotic as a breast dip after milking.

• It can improve uddar (the milk-producing part).
• Reduce inflammation that damages the breast.
• It also reduces the use of antibiotics and helps control the disease in a less expensive way.
  • Treatment of infected animals with antibiotics poses a public health hazard.
