New eel species discovered in Mumbai

Context

In a latest development, a new species of Swamp Eel belonging to the genus Rakthamicthys (endemic to India) has been discovered in a well in Mumbai.

About the species

• Scientific name: Teleostei Synbranchidae
• The hypogean eel is called Rakthamichthys Mumba– the Mumbai blind eel. 
• This is the first completely blind subterranean freshwater fish species to be characterized from Maharashtra and the Northern western Ghats.
• Genus: Genus Rakthamicthys (endemic to India).
• Present known habitat: Mumbai well
