IN-EUNAVFOR Exercise in Gulf Of Aden

Context
Indian Naval Ship Trikand is participating in the IN – EUNAVFOR Joint Naval Exercise in the Gulf of Aden.
About the Exercise
- A total of five warships of four navies from India, Italy, Spanish, and France are participating in the exercise on 18thand 19th June 2021.
- An Italian Navy Ship ITS Carabiner, Spanish Navy Ship ESPS Navarra, and two French Navy Ships the FS Tonnerre and FS Surcouf are participating.
- It will be a two-day exercise.
- It will include a high tempo-naval operation at sea, advanced air defense, and anti-submarine exercises, cross deck helicopter operations, tactical maneuvers, boarding operations, underway replenishment, Search & Rescue, Man Overboard drills, and other maritime security operations.
- Ships of the four navies will cooperate to enhance and hone their war-fighting skills.
- They will work together to promote their ability as an integrated force to maintain peace, security, and stability in the maritime domain.
- EUNAVFOR and the Indian Navy converge on issues including counter-piracy operations and protection of vessels deployed under the charter of the World Food Programme (UN WFP).
- The navies also have regular interaction via SHADE (Shared Awareness and De-confliction) meetings held annually in Bahrain.
- This showcases increased levels of synergy, coordination, and interoperability between the navies.
- It also ensures freedom of seas and commitment to an open, inclusive, and rules-based international order.
European Union Naval Force Somalia (EU NAVFOR)
- EUNAVFOR operation ATALANTA was launched on 8th December 2008.
- It is following the United Nations Security Council resolutions to deter, prevent and repress piracy and to protect vulnerable vessels and humanitarian shipments off the coast of Somalia.
- The mandate of Operation ATALANTA has constantly been adapted to reflect the situation at sea and support the EU Integrated Approach to Somalia and the Horn of Africa.
SHADE (Shared Awareness and De-confliction)
- It is an international operational counter-piracy platform, convened in Bahrain.
- It is aimed to encourage partners to share information, assessing the evolution of trends, best practices, and de-conflict operations amongst counter-piracy actors in the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Oman, and the Western Indian Ocean.
- Its first meeting was held in Bahrain in December 2008.
