A recent study showed that the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) is one of the emerging sites for infrared and optical astronomy studies. 

About Indian Astronomical Observatory

• The Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) is located in Hanle near Leh in Ladakh.
• The observatory has one of the world's highest located sites for optical, infrared and gamma-ray telescopes. 
• Operated by: Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore. 
• Situated at an elevation of 4,500 meters, it is currently the 9^th highest optical telescope in the world.

  • 2.01 meter optical-infrared Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT)
  • High Altitude Gamma Ray Telescope (HAGAR)
  • GROWTH-India telescope
