CLC reviews implementation of Labour Laws and new Labour Codes

Context
Chief Labour Commissioner and DG Labour Bureau reviewed the status of sensitization and implementation of labor laws and labor codes at Zojila Pass and Kargil.
- The review of implementation was conducted in lieu to enquire about the prevailing labor issues at their project sites.
About the Labour Laws and new Labour Codes
- Labour falls under the Concurrent List of the
- Therefore, both the Parliament and state legislatures can make laws regulating labor.
Reforms in the sector
- The Second National Commission on Labour (2002) (NCL) found existing legislation as complex, with archaic provisions and inconsistent definitions.
- The NCL recommended the consolidation of central labor laws into broader groups such as (i) industrial relations, (ii) wages, (iii) social security, (iv) safety, and (v) welfare and working conditions.
- The central government proposes to replace 29 existing labor laws with four Codes. The objective is to simplify and modernize labor regulation.
