The Democratic chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Menendez called for India to be threatened with sanctions under Section 231 of the Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) over its purchase of the Russian missile system.
What are CAATSA and its Section 231?
- Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act is a United States federal law that will impose sanctions on Iran, North Korea, and Russia.
- Under this act,the USA can impose sanctions against countries that engage in significant transactionswith Russia's defense and intelligence sectors.
- Section 231 imposes sanctions on entities that "operate for or on behalf of" Russian defense or intelligence sectors.
What would be the impact of CAATSA on India?
- It will undermine the India-US relation.
- It would also impact the QUAD efforts to counter China.
S-400 missile
- The S-400 Triumf is an anti-aircraft weapon system that was developed in the 1990s by Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau.
- China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, India, and Belarus have either acquired or expressed interest, in the system.
- The S-400 can be armed with four different types of missiles with ranges of 400 km, 250 km, 120 km, and 40 km.
