Broadcast Seva Portal launched

Context

The government recently launched the Broadcast Seva Portal of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, to open a "new chapter" in Ease of Doing Business in the Broadcasting sector.

Broadcast Seva Portal Services

  • 'Broadcast Seva Portal' is an online portal solution for speedy filing and processing of applications for various kinds of licences, permissions and registrations among other services.
  • The portal is expected to provide a 360-degree solution to over 900 Satellite TV channels, over 70 teleport operators, over 1,750 multi-service operators, over 350 community radio stations (CRS) and over 380 private FM channels.
  • It will also provide faceless communication between the applicant and different stakeholders for faster processing of applications.
  • The portal has a database of institutions including TV channels, news agencies, TRP agencies, OTT and Digital Media, local cable operators, DTH Operators, FM channels, community radio stations, Multi-System Operators, Satellite TV Channels, Teleports, HITS Operators and user information system.
  • The portal will also help in the setting up of Community Radio Stations. 
  • It will also help in the process guidelines for registration as Multi-System Operators and will provide guidelines for the Temporary uplink of various live events.

The need of the initiative

  • The country’s media and entertainment sectors are rapidly growing.
  • In the next two years, it will reach the USD 30 billion mark, and currently it is at USD 25 billion.
  • The country has over 1762 multi-service operators, more than 900 satellite TV channels, over 380 FM channels, and 350 community radio stations.
  • The Broadcast Seva Portal falls in line with the Make in India, Ease of Doing Business, and Digital India initiatives.

Objective 

  • The Broadcast Seva (BS) Portal will provide a single point facility to the stakeholders and applicants to apply for various registrations, permissions and licences issued by I&B Ministry for broadcast related activities. 
  • The portal will enable establishment of an efficient and transparent system for the growth and management of the Broadcast sector.
  • The portal will enable smooth communication between the applicants and different stakeholders and speed up processing of applications.

Ministry of Information and Broadcasting

  • Founded: 15 August 1947
  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is one among the early Ministries set up after India’s Independence.
  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was India’s first Minister for Information and Broadcasting.
  • The Ministry is entrusted with the task of disseminating information about government policies, schemes and programmes through the different medium of mass communication covering radio, television, press, social media, printed publicity like booklets; posters, outdoor publicity including through traditional modes of communication such as dance, drama, folk recitals, puppet shows etc. 
  • The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting is functionally organized into three wings
    1. Information Wing
    2. Broadcasting Wing
    3. Films Wing
