BRO starts work to open Baralacha La Pass before schedule

Context
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) team trekked through the snow in a bid to open the Baralacha La pass that connects Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh.
About Baralacha La
- Bara-lacha lais also known as Bara-lacha Pass.
- It is a high mountain passin the Zanskar range.
- It connects Lahauldistrict in Himachal Pradesh to Leh district in Ladakh.
- It is situated along the Leh–Manali Highway.
- Rivers in the vicinity: The Bhaga river, a tributary of the Chenab river, originates from Surya taallake, is situated a few kilometers from the pass towards Manali.
- The pass also acts as a water-divide between the Bhagariver and the Yunam river.
Reasons behind the Opening of Bara-Lacha la
- Connectivity with Ladakh: It is crucial amid the ongoing tension with China in Eastern Ladakh.
- Frontline deployment: There has been no reduction of troops and enhanced deployment at the frontline continues.
- Strategic advantage: The early commencement of work to open the crucial pass before the scheduled date is expected to provide a strategic advantage to India over adversaries.
