Verb → Call

 

1. Call away
Meaning - To ask one to leave one's current space or task and do something else.
Example - I was working on that report, but then I got called away to put ink in the printer.

 

2. Call down
Meaning - To invoke or request divine intervention.
Example - While in the throes of mourning, I called down for comfort from the heavens.

 

3. Call for

(i) Meaning - If you call for someone, you go to the building where they are so that you can both go somewhere.
Example - I shall be calling for you at seven o'clock.

 

(ii) Meaning - If you call for something, you demand that it should happen.
Example - The ceasefire resolution calls for the release of all prisoners of war.

 

(iii) Meaning - If something calls for a particular action or quality, it needs it or makes it necessary.
Example - It's a situation that calls for a blend of delicacy and force.

 

4. Call in

(i) Meaning - If you call someone in, you ask them to come and help you or do something for you.
Example - Call in an architect or surveyor to oversee the work.

(ii) Meaning - If you call in somewhere, you make a short visit there.
Example - He just calls in

 

5. Call off
Meaning - If you call off an event that has been planned, you cancel it.
Example - The union threatened a strike but called it off at the last minute.

 

6. Call on

(i) Meaning - If you call on someone to do something or call upon them to do it, you say publicly that you want them to do it.
Example - One of Kenya's leading churchmen has called on the government to resign.

 

(ii) Meaning - If you call on someone or call upon someone, you pay them a short visit
Example - Sofia was intending to call on Miss Kitts.

 

7. Call out
Meaning - If you call someone out, you order or request that they come to help, especially in an emergency.
Example - Colombia has called out the army and imposed emergency measures.

 

8. Call back

Meaning – To call someone back

Example -  I am on my way to the auditorium so, I can’t talk right now, but I’ll call back as soon as the function gets over.

 

9. Call up

Meaning – Call (someone) to do something

Example – Have you called up the plumber to repair the water tap?

 

10. Call after

Meaning – To give a child the same name as someone else, especially a family member

Example – We have called him Ganesh after his grandfather.
